Benefits of the course
The main objective of the course is to expose the entire problem solving tool kit to the children and develop a life long skill. The context in which the problems will be solved is the preparation for Junior Maths Challenge exam that is based on the school curriculum for years 7 & 8.
1) The primary focus of this course is to prepare for the Junior Maths Challenge exam. Only top 10% of this exam qualify for the next round – Junior Kangaroo or Olympiad. The Olympiad exam, in particular has a very high qualifying cut-off and only the top 0.2% - 1200 out of over 400,000 who appear for the challenge exam in the age group of 11-13 (total population being 3 million) in the UK get an Olympiad medal. This makes it a highly prestigious and coveted achievement. It’s a lifetime achievement that helps all the way up to getting admission in the desired course at top Universities and beyond.
2) Olympiad qualification or not, the course is designed to stretch your abilities beyond the usual. It imparts a systematic approach to viewing the problem from different angles, analyzing its different aspects, applying a disciplined & systematic to finally solve it. Pre-requisites:
1) The attendees and the parents have to register for the course with the right expectation and mindset. This is not a usual year 6, 7 & 8 Maths curricula revision course. This takes to the next level and is aimed at doing well in Maths Challenge exam with the ultimate objective of qualifying for the next round. Undoubtedly, there will be times when the attendees may feel overwhelmed and may have the urge to quit. A right mindset and support from the parents is a must to perform at the level of top 1200 mathematician across UK.
2) High speed Internet Access with a speaker/headphone in a quiet room – To get the benefit out of the 1.5 hour sessions over webex, you will need this. No installations or licenses are required for the webex.
3) All the sessions will involve audio—video interactions with very minimal expectations to write during the sessions. However, if they are comfortable, the attendees will be required to take their own notes alongside the session. No notes/presentations/documents (downloadable or via email) will be provided from our side, except that is available on the website.
4) Gmail id – The course will be on Google classroom and all attendees will need a gmail id. The attendees or their parents will have to upload the tracker before each session to mark the completion of homework.
